All I want for Christmas is a pub - a festive rhyme from a Brixton poet

Fed up with so many pubs closing down in and around Brixton – particularly her former local, The Grosvenor – local poet Stevie has penned a eulogy to the traditional boozers that are vanishing from her neighbourhood.

The old Crown pub on Coldharbour Lane, Brixton set to be a Co-Op supermarket

We like it, so we’ve reproduced it below (with her kind permission):

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A PUB

All I want for Christmas is a pub
With a back room for some country or some dub
You can keep your skating rink
We just want to have a drink
All we want for Christmas is a pub.
All I want for Christmas is a pint
Guinness, ale or cider, I don’t mind
A pint that’s nicely poured
By a barmaid who’s not bored
All I want for Christmas is a pint.
All I want for Christmas is a place
A place where I can see a friendly place
You can keep your cocktail bars
And your champagne et fromage
All we want for Christmas is a place.
All we want is somewhere to get drunk
Have a laugh with all the rastas and the punks
You can keep out all the poor
With your bouncers on the door
All we want is somewhere to get drunk.
Altogether Brixton!
All I want for Christmas is a pub
With a back room for some country or some dub
You can keep your skating rink
We just want to have a drink
All we want for Christmas is a pub.
Rub a dub.
